caribbeanAVIANCA_JFK_0910.jpgConcourse B at Terminal 4. Caribbean 737-800 at gate B28, Avianca A319 at gate B30. Both will spend the night at their respective gates and depart in the morning. Note the registration, 9Y-SLU. Interestingly, Caribbean uses the last 3 letters of each aircraft's registration to represent the cities the airline serves. SLU is St. Lucia

frankfurtFRAoverview_0910.jpgIf you look behind the terminal you'll notice a behemoth cruise ship looking structure. That is a new Hilton hotel featuring 5000 rooms. I watched this hotel being built from scratch- if you ever go to Frankfurt and drive by it, you'll see that it is just absolutely incredible. Note that it's a free standing structure (hard to tell that from this photo)

a340_EMB145_0909b.jpgTiming is everything! Lufthansa A340 flies over an Embraer 145. Some may see this and be shocked that this goes on but rest assured, this is completely normal and both aircraft are TCAS equipped (Terminal Collision Avoidance System). TCAS is a screen in the cockpit that shows other airplanes that are within the subject aircraft's airspace. The TCAS picks up other airplanes via their transponder which every airliner has on board. In addition to TCAS, ATC is also monitoring traffic, which is especially heavy over central Europe

Seen in the distance is the takeoff que for 31L departure.

|

airchina747400lax0209.jpgHaving just arrived, the 747 stops on taxiway between Terminals 1 & 2 and shuts engines as tug crew comes over to hook up and tow on to gate. Reason is because if the airplane performs the turn to gate on its own power, the adjoining gates' equipment and people can get blasted by the engines' turbulence as power is applied to make the turn. Tow-on-only gates are common at many big airports for this important safety reason

afconcfbvfcjfk800.jpgSadly, this Air France Concorde was parked at Terminal 1 for several months after F-BTSC crashed in Paris. fbvfaJP.jpgA very special photo in my collection. F-BVFF just arrived from Paris taxiing to Terminal 1, while F-BVFA taxiis out of Terminal 1 on its way to runway 31L for departure to Paris. Only one airport on Earth offered not only Concorde service but multiple Concorde service daily with two Air France's and two British Airways Concordes. I know that I speak for all my friends at JFK that we miss that airplane sorely!
